MOST POPULAR PLACES FROM LONDON:

Big Ben

The Clock Tower is the world's largest four-faced, chiming turret clock. The structure is situated at the north-eastern end of the Houses of Parliament building in Westminster, London, United Kingdom. It is often mistakenly called "Big Ben" — which is actually the main bell housed within the Clock Tower. The Clock Tower has also been referred to as St Stephen's Tower or The Tower of Big Ben or Big Tom. However, St Stephen's Tower is actually towards the middle of the Palace, and is the main point of entry for attendees of debates and committees.

Buckingham Palace

Today, Buckingham Palace is not only the weekday home of the Queen and Prince Philip but also the London residence of the Duke of York and the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The palace also houses the offices of the Royal Household and is the workplace of 450 people. Every year some 50,000 invited guests are entertained at garden parties, receptions, audiences, and banquets. The Garden Parties, usually three, are held in the summer, usually in July. The Forecourt of Buckingham Palace is used for Changing of the Guard, a major ceremony and tourist attraction (daily during the summer months; every other day during the winter).

London bridge

Tower Bridge is a bascule bridge in London, England over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London and is sometimes mistakenly called London Bridge, which is actually the next bridge upstream. The bridge is owned and maintained by Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the Corporation of London.

London eye

The London Eye, also known as the Millennium Wheel, is an observation wheel that completed construction in 1999 and opened to the public in March, 2000. It is the tallest observation wheel in the world. It was opened by British Prime Minister Tony Blair at 20:00 GMT on December 31, 1999, although it was not opened to the public until March 2000 because of technical problems. Since its opening, the Eye, operated by Merlin Entertainments but sponsored by British Airways, has become a major landmark and tourist attraction.

A NEW THEATRE STYLE

With the reopening of the theaters in 1594, Shakespeare is associated with the companion of Lord Chamberlain. George Chapman joined the companion of Lord Admiral. It is a great opportunity to Shakespeare: in just over two years, write: Romeo and Juliet, The Dream of a Summer Night, Richard II, The Merchant of Venice, The amansiment of Fury. The government only allows the children's performances, but they end up taking a critical tone even more corrosive than those of adults. Shakespeare criticizes this atmosphere in one of the largest tragedies that writes, Henry IV, a play starring the sarcastic and relaxing Falstaff (a character that Shakespeare to recover the glory of Windsor waterfalls). Three works are for young players decided that, in the absence of sensible men, adopting the role of boys; Much ado about nothing, to your taste and Twelfth Night. The 1597 forced by the owner abandonan 'The Theater'. On the night of Christmas 1598 takes the wooden theater on the winged side of the Thames, built on 'The Glove'. The North translated that Thomas had just taken from Plutarch gives the historical material needed to carry endevant his new project.

A NEW THREATRAL STYLE

With the reopening of the theatre in 1594, Shakespeare associated with Lord Chamberlain's company, the queens cousin. Christopher Marlowe was assassinated, Robert Greene and Thomas Nashe died as consequence of a desease, George Peele was ill, Thomas Lodge and Jhon Lyly stoped writting and George Chapman moved to another company. It was a great opportunity for Shakespeare and in two years time he wrotte lots of amazing plays which the public loved and which were very popular.

1. What was the name of the company Shakespeare belonged to ?

The Lord Chamberlain's Men.

2. How many companies were licensed to perform in London ?

Only 2.

3. Why did Shakespeare's company build the Globe ?

In 1599

4. What did Shakespeare's company use to build the Globe ?

Shakespeare's company only built the Globe because they could not use the special playhouse that their chief actor Richard Burbage's father had built for them in 1596, a roofed theatre inside the city, in Blackfriars.
James Burbage had a long history as a theatrical entrepreneur. In 1576 he built the first successful amphitheatre, known as The Theatre, in a London suburb. Twenty years later, when the lease on The Theatre's land was about to expire, he built the Blackfriars as its replacement. But the wealthy residents of Blackfriars got the government to block its use for plays, so his capital was locked up uselessly.

5. Who built the Globe ?

The Globe was built by two brothers, Richard and Cuthbert Burbage.

6. When the Globe was built , there were two other theatres in Southwark already. Which ones ?

The Swan and The Rose.

7. When was it built ?

In 1598.

8. How and when was it destroyed ?

In 1613, during a performance of Henry VIII, the thatch of the Globe was accidentally set alight by a cannon, set off to mark the King's entrance onstage in a scene at Cardinal Wolsey's palace. The entire theatre was destroyed within the hour.

9. When was it rebuilt ?

By June 1614 it had been rebuilt, this time with a tiled gallery roof and a circular shape.

10. When was it finally pulled down ? Why ?
It was pulled down in 1644, two years after the Puritans closed all theatres, to make way for tenement dwellings.

11. Explain how acting at the Globe was like.
Acting at the Globe was radically different from viewing modern Shakespeare on screen.
The plays were staged in the afternoons, using the light of day. Therefore, all references to weather or time of the day had to be given to the audience through the text.
The audience surrounded the stage on all sides. No scenery was used, except for occasional emblematic devices like a throne or a bed. It was almost impossible not to see the other half of the audience standing behind the players. Consequently much of the staging was metatheatrical, conceding the illusory nature of the game of playing, and making little pretense to stage realism .
